Japanese

nihongo – 日本語

Japanese is currently being offered at Hambledon State School for year levels four, five and six. Learning a language has many benefits such as improving thinking and communication skills, and in reducing cultural prejudices. The skills gained in learning a language can open up new job opportunities as well as study exchange possibilities. Learning Japanese is particularly relevant to the Cairns region due to the high Japanese resident population and the strong political ties with Japan in areas such as education, tourism and trade.

Activities in the classroom include vocabulary and sentence structure learning, conversation and speaking practice, listening and reading activities and games to consolidate the words and sentences learned. Students also learn about Japan, a unique country with natural beauty, a long history and a fascinating blend of traditional and modern culture. Some examples of cultural activities in the classroom are origami, the art of paper folding, and calligraphy. There are also extra-curricular opportunities. The main event for Languages is the Cairns Languages Speaking Competition that is held in Term Three every year. Information about this event will be distributed in Term Two.

Parents and carers can help children learning Japanese by showing an interest in what they are studying. Students are able to access a learning website from home that contains songs, audio files and interactive games. Please allow your children to access this site if possible. Parents and carers are also encouraged to access this site to see what types of things students are working on.
